Dr Traeger's presentation on Sports Safety to the Parent Expo 2012 (Coming Soon)

Text from the "Medical Minute:"

Hello, this is Aaron Traeger, pediatrician with Advocate Medical Group. Participation in youth sports is at an all time high. And while no sport is 100 percent safe there is a lot that parents and coaches can do to help reduce the risk of injury to young athletes. First, make sure children of the same size and development level are playing against each other. Even in non contact sports the speed and skill level can be very different between children of the same age. Second, train for the sport rather than relying on the sport to train you. Jumping into a sport without off season sport specific conditioning can put extra stress on the body and increase the chance of injury. Third, take time to warm up and cool down before and after play. Be mindful to not overuse arms and legs as overuse injuries can cause long term damage. And finally, use protective equipment the right way. Pads and helmets should fit correctly and mouthguards should not be forgotten.
